The great thing about cycling is how forgiving it is to your body. Long after they have to give up running or skiing, athletes discover they can continue their athletic careers on a bike. With a good bike fit from your local bike shop, and with proper training, anyone can lose weight, get stronger, and achieve and maintain the best fitness of his or her life.

The key is a scientifically-based periodization plan that gradually builds pedaling technique, muscular strength, base endurance, greater speed and better bike handling. You will work a little harder each day, making gains that will be sizable each month. But you won’t suufer the injuries, aches and pains that create setbacks and cause riders to stop. Instead, you will enjoy the exhilaration of a hard workout and the relaxing pleasure of exercise-induced endorphins in your body every day.

A general fitness program will ask you to devote at least 4 to 6 hours per week on the bike, 5 days per week.
